Pre-Columbian, circa. 600-1550 AD. Dominican Republic. Exquisite Yacahu like Zemi, very complex multiple beings. A large bird man completely enveloping the cone. The bold head band becomes arms for the bird and sits next to the beak. The beak rests between the eyes on the primary face. Bird head symbols accentuate the eyes. Reversed, the back of the bird head becomes the head of an insect like being. The large wings become a grand face filling the back of the cone. Human-like legs extend from the wing tips. Another abstract face appears between the wings and the feet. Quite elaborate with multiple characterizations. An example of some of the best craftsmanship being applied to triforms. Precise eye and mouth surrounds. Type 1. The base is concave, cupped, pecked and polished. 6″ high x 5″ wide x 8 1/2″ long. From the estate of Dr. Robert Woodruff, former president of Entomology at the University of Florida who studied insects in the Dominican Republic for 40 years, while there collecting Taino art, amber and Larimer.
