Description

Circa 1200-1500 AD. Black, hard stone, possibly basalt. An outstanding snake scepter, elaborately engraved with ornate symbolism. This piece is a perfectly formed snake from head to tail. The head is triangular with a pointed nose, large eyes and grand dental array. The back follows a typical pattern used by Taino artisans, two matching strips run down the back, each incised with a continuous wavy line. The belly is a series of facing swirls. A remarkable work of art, simple but dynamic. 2 3/4″ wide x 14″ long. Former collection of Dr. Lester Walker, Univ of Georgia Art Dept. 1970s to private collection, Decatur, GA.
