Circa 1200-1500 AD. Marble. Dominican Republic. A highly important anthropic to zoomorphic transformation sculpture. The recumbent position and excessively wide mouth points to animal intent. An embossed ridge down the back symbolizes the vertebral column. There is a second face incised on the end of the sculpture. There are spirit portals drilled through the hips and ankles. Sculpture this fine was made during the Classic era of Taino art when they produced some of their finest art work and many of their larger pieces. 7 3/4″ wide x 4″ high x 14 5/8″ long.
