Circa 600–1500 AD. Pre-Colombian. They had probably represented an ancestral head and carried to worship deceased elites. Skull worship is a common practice among pre-Colombian cultures. However, the Taino carried it to the level of fine art creating an abundance of exceptionally carved skulls worthy of ancestral worship. Deep set eyes and a broad, smiling mouth accent accentuate the effigy. The back of the skull is cupped. Highly polished serpentine. 4 1/2″ h x 3″ w. Good condition.
