Description

Pre-Columbian, circa. 600-1550 AD. Dominican Republic. Huge wings with human-like leg extensions are a common design used to denote an effigy with shamanic import. A large, 3-dimensional head centers the sculpture and captures the focus of the viewer. The symbolic designs are relief carved adding strength to the imagery. There are perforations under the knee and ankle areas, considered as spirit portals where negative and positive energy enters and leaves the body. Made from a beautiful light green serpentine with black linear inclusions. 3 1/2″ high x 6″ wide x 4″ deep. Purchased from the estate of Pre-Columbian art dealer John Fulling to private Miami collection. Fulling dealt extensively in Hispaniola art.
