19th century. Jewelry or sewing box. Sailor made. Lift top with inlaid abalone and bone star and floral design. Top opens to reveal a mirrored back and seven interior compartments, four with inlaid wooden doors and bone handles. Front has abalone inlay stars and diamonds with one drawer. Bone handles and feet. 5 3/4″ high x 12″ wide x 9″ deep. Top shows some age separations. One bone handle shows cracked separation but is still functional. Interior mirror shows some pitting and silver loss. Provenance: From the estate of Alan Gaines of A & A Gaines Antiques, Newport, Rhode Island.
