Baleen scrimshaw ditty box. 19th-century. An oval baleen box. Fingered construction with overall engraving with ships, trains, figures, mottos and cartouche with coastal city scene with ships in harbor. One ship flying an American flag. The box is signed N. Nye, and also signed illegibly. 4″ high by 6 1/2″ wide by 4 3/4″ deep. Shows repair to lid. Insect damage. Purchased on Nantucket many years ago.
