Coin Silver Sugar Bowl. Early 19th century. The bowl once belonged to William Makepeace Thackeray. Made by Merriman & Bradley of New Haven, CT. Scrolled handles, acorn finial, gadrooned borders with engraved family crest and a later engraved presentation to Isabel Stevens Lathrop in 1916. 6 1/2″ high, 8″ wide. 16.6 ozt. Accompanying the lot are 3 letters, with history and provenance. The bowl was given to Isabel Lathrop by Lady Anne Thackeray Ritchie, noted author and daughter of William Thackeray. Isabel Lathrop was a noted American singer and member of the French Legion of Honor for her hospital and reconstruction work in Paris. It was given in appreciation for her work she was doing in England before she left for France during World War I. There is a typed and signed letter from Lady Anne Thackeray Ritchie as well as a handwritten letter given to Isabel Lathrop.
