George W. Whitaker (1841-1916, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts) oil on canvas. Believed to be Mackeral Cove in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Gesso and molded gold gilt frame. Signed lower right. Sight size 22″ by 28″. Overall size 27 1/2″ by 33 1/2″. Was called Dean of RI Painters. He studied in Barbizon, France in the 1880s. He was also one of the founders of the Providence Art Club. He had a gallery in his home at Fruit Hill and a studio in the Fleur de Lys building in Providence, RI. He taught at the Rhode Island School of Design.
