Description

Dated 1817. Made by Edward Farrell (1780-1850) London silversmith. An exceptional sterling silver tea kettle on stand with an ornate scroll work swing handle. A figural finial top. High repousse relief design featuring neo-classical motifs including satyrs. Animals include elephants, camels and dogs. One side features Teniers style Dutch tavern scene, overall with grape and vine design, including Bacchus head with grapes on spout. Stand features open work base with floral, scroll, birds, sea shell, dragons, faces, and terminating in foliate feet. Including stand and handle: 16″ high x 12″ wide x 8″ diameter. Triangular footed tray has entwining grape and leaf open work border, each corner has three embossed female heads, feet are full figured eagles. The center design motif is a Greek mythological scene depicting the abduction of Ganymede to be Zeus’ cupbearer by an eagle, flanked by dogs. 2 1/2″ high x 11 1/2″ wide. Kettle fits on footed tray. Overall very good condition. Shows some loss to old leather hand grip. Age appropriate wear. Kettle weight: 73.91 ozt.; footed stand weight: 49.12 ozt; tray weight: 37 ozt. Total weight: 160.03 ozt.
