Three-month journal, handwritten from the New Bedford Whaleship America with Captain Charles Seabury in command. She sailed from New Bedford on April 1, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco on September 22 carrying passengers and supplies for the gold rush craze. The discovery of gold in San Francisco captivated many of the sailors involved in New Bedford Whaling and enticed them to travel to San Francisco to find gold. The journal mentions passing the Falkland Islands as well as going around Cape Horn where numerous whales were cited. Included in this is a newspaper article outlining the adventures of Captain JM Tilton who traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. 15″ by 10″. Nine two sided handwritten pages some shows staining and discoloration, very legible handwriting. A handwritten poem is also attached. There are some modern ink notations on the tops of the pages.
