Ca. 1860s. A very finely chased and repousse tapered cylindrical cup with intricate designs featuring dancers, birds, tigers, elephants, peacocks and dragons. Engraved on base, “Presented to Capt. C.J.F.S. Forbes by No. 8 Company to Batt. 19th Reg on his retirement.” Otherwise unmarked. Probably Captain Charles James Forbes Smith Forbes, British Colonial officer in Burma, 1834-1879. He retired from the Army in 1863. 6″ high x 3″ diameter at base. 16.145 ozt. Good overall condition. Provenance: From the estate of Alan Gaines of A & A Gaines Antiques, Newport, Rhode Island.
