All marked proof, published by Benjamin Russell, New Bedford, MA, 1872, J. H. Bufford’s lithographer, Boston. Abandonment of the Whalers in the Arctic Ocean, Sept. 1871. Depicts scenes from the 1871 whaling disaster when 40 whaling ships were caught by an early freeze. Crews were transferred to 7 free ships, saving all 1219 people, but 33 ships were lost. The sight size is 13 1/2″ x 19″, overall with frame 20 3/4″ x 26″. Good condition. Gilded frames shows minor losses. Provenance: From the estate of Adaline Havemeyer Perkins.
