Description

(1877-1958) New Bedford and South Dartmouth, MA artist. Four pastel portraits each depicting a young woman, ca. 1900. One is of an elegantly dressed woman with blue feathered hat, signed lower right with monogram HN, and signed in pencil on verso, dated 1902. Sight size 23 1/2″ x 17 1/2″, in modern gilt frame 26 1/2″ x 20 1/2″. The second is of an attractive young woman with blue bow in her hair, signed lower right and dated 1902. Sight size 20 1/2″ x 13 1/2″, in modern gilt frame 27 1/2″ x 21″. Third is a woman with lace collar, signed with monogram lower right. Sight size 20″ x 13″, in modern gilt frame 27 1/2″x 21″. The last portrait depicts a woman with closed eyes, signed lower right. Sight size 19 1/2″ x 15 1/2″, in modern gilt frame 22 1/2″ x 18 1/2″. This lot also includes a pen and ink portrait of a woman titled “The Hat”, signed and dated, 1903. Sight size 18 1/2″ x 14 1/2″, unframed. Shows staining, light foxing and chips to left edge. Also a dark charcoal drawing of Venice, signed lower right and dated 1900. Shows 7 1/2″ tear and chipping to edges. Harry Neyland was the Director of the Swain Free School. He was a highly regarded artist who exhibited in domestic as well as foreign art centers.
