Depicts scenes from the 1871 whaling disaster when 40 whaling ships were caught by an early freeze. Crews were transferred to seven free ships saving all 1219 people, but 33 ships were lost. Sight size 13″ high x 17-1/2″ wide. In modern gold frames measuring 21″ high x 26-1/2″ wide. Not removed from frame but appear to be trimmed.
