1938. (2) Art Deco watercolor portraits done by renowned archaeologist Piet De Jong signed lower right and upper left. Framed under glass 20 3/4″ h x 13 3/4″ w. Overall 21 9/16″ h x 14 3/4″ w. Piet de Jong was responsible for the restoration and reconstruction of archaeological sites in the Mediterranean including Mycenae, Knossos, Eutresis, Gordion, and the Athenian Agora. At Knossos de Jong recreated the Minoan frescoes that adorn the site today. He was associated with the British School of Athens and The American School of Classical Studies in Athens. These caricatures were obtained by Charles Morgan in Athens in the 1930s.
